Short history: Founded in 1968 by the Brussels office of Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York, Euroclear was created to improve efficiency and reduce risk in eurobond settlements. It was the first ICSD in the world and was rebranded as Euroclear in 1990. In 2000, the Euroclear System was transferred to Euroclear Bank, a fully owned subsidiary. Over the years, Euroclear expanded by acquiring major national CSDs in Belgium, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK.
