About us

What we do: The Centre Spatial de Liège (CSL) is a leading research center affiliated with the University of Liège, specializing in the design, integration, calibration, and environmental testing of advanced instruments and systems for scientific and industrial space programs. Our core activities focus on space instrumentation, optical design, metrology, surface engineering, electronics, and signal processing. We operate eight specialized laboratories covering electronics, thermo-mechanical engineering, cryogenics, optical design and metrology, surface engineering, lasers and non-destructive testing, signal processing, and quality control. CSL provides customized services to expose instruments, systems, and even satellites to the extreme conditions encountered in deep space, including vacuum, thermal, cryogenic, and vibratory environments. Our clients include major space agencies such as ESA, NASA, JAXA, and CNES, as well as the European space industry and regional companies. We also support technology transfer to the local economy, particularly in the Walloon region, and have developed applications in radar imagery processing and quantum key distribution derived from our space project expertise.

Where we are located: Our headquarters is located at Avenue du Pré Aily, 4031 Liège (Angleur), Belgium. All our research, testing, and development activities are concentrated at this site, which features state-of-the-art facilities, including thermal-vacuum chambers, shakers, and a large clean room area.

Short history: CSL was founded in the mid-1960s within the Astrophysics department of the University of Liège, initially focusing on observations from rocket probes. Over the decades, we have contributed to numerous high-profile space missions, including the development of instruments for the Hubble Space Telescope, the Halley Multicolour Camera aboard the Giotto spacecraft, and the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on the SOHO satellite. Our expertise has also been applied in missions such as XMM-Newton, INTEGRAL, Herschel, Planck, and JUNO. CSL has a long-standing reputation for innovation and has played a key role in advancing space science and technology in Europe.

Organization & culture: CSL employs over 100 professionals, including engineers, scientists, and technicians, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning. Half of our team are engineers and scientists, reflecting our strong focus on research and development. We value teamwork, innovation, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of aerospace science. Our organization is known for its efficiency and realism, appreciated by both academic and industrial partners. CSL also supports the development of spin-off companies through initiatives like Wallonia Space Logistics, helping to bring space-derived technologies to the market.
