About us
What we do: GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg is an independent, neutral, non-profit organization dedicated to fostering efficiency, safety, and sustainability across supply chains by developing and implementing global standards such as barcodes and GTINs[3][5]. We serve as a trusted partner for retailers, healthcare institutions, manufacturers, logistics providers, and their suppliers, enabling them to uniquely identify, accurately capture, and automatically share vital information about products, locations, and assets[3][5]. Our standards are used by supermarkets, DIY and garden stores, online shops, hospitals, pharmacies, and companies in sectors like FMCG, healthcare, fashion, construction, and transport[3][5]. By providing unique identification codes and facilitating transparent data exchange, we help businesses optimize their operations, ensure traceability, and comply with evolving regulations such as the EU Green Deal, deforestation regulation (EUDR), and packaging regulation (PPWR)[5]. Our mission is to create a common language for the supply chain, supporting digitization and the transition to a circular economy where sustainability and responsible resource use are central[2][3].
Where we are located: Our headquarters is located at Galerie Ravenstein 4/10, 1000 Brussels, Belgium[1][6]. This central location allows us to serve both the Belgian and Luxembourg markets effectively.
Short history: GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg was established in 1978 as part of the global GS1 network, which pioneered the barcode system now used worldwide[1]. Over the decades, we have grown to support over 9,000 member companies, continuously adapting our services to meet the needs of a digital and regulated marketplace[3]. Our long-standing commitment to neutrality and collaboration has made us a key player in the evolution of supply chain standards in the Benelux region.
Organization & culture: We are a medium-sized organization with a team of around 53–55 professionals who value collaboration, continuous learning, and respect for diverse perspectives[2][6]. Our culture is built on teamwork, innovation, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact on the industries we serve. GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg has been recognized as a Great Place to Work®, reflecting our focus on employee well-being and professional growth[2]. We empower our employees to contribute meaningfully to our mission and foster an environment where everyone can thrive.
Recent developments: In line with the EU’s push for greater sustainability, we have expanded our services to help businesses comply with new regulations such as the EUDR and PPWR, ensuring that product data meets the highest standards of quality and transparency[5]. We also offer tailored solutions like starter packs for entrepreneurs, making it easier for small businesses to join the global supply chain[5]. Our ongoing efforts in digitization and data quality continue to position us as a leader in supply chain innovation.
