About us

What we do: Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège is one of Belgium’s leading performing arts institutions, renowned for its world-class opera, ballet, and cultural events. As the Lyrical Center of the French Community of Belgium, we present a rich repertoire of works by composers such as Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner, alongside contemporary productions and innovative programming. Our historic venue, the Théâtre Royal de Liège, is a cultural landmark that hosts over 300 performances and events each season, attracting nearly 10,000 visitors. Beyond the stage, we are committed to arts education, offering initiatives for young audiences, participatory performances, and affordable access for those under 32. We also provide unique event spaces for corporate and private functions, making the arts accessible to a diverse audience.

Where we are located: Our headquarters is located at Place de l’Opéra 1, 4000 Liège, Belgium, in the heart of the city’s cultural district. This iconic building, inaugurated in 1820, has been home to the opera company since 1967 and stands as a symbol of Liège’s vibrant arts scene.

Short history: The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège was established in 1967, building on the legacy of the historic Théâtre Royal de Liège, which dates back to 1820. Over the decades, the company has grown into one of the three major opera houses in Belgium, alongside La Monnaie and Vlaamse Opera. Significant renovations between 2009 and 2012 modernized our facilities, ensuring state-of-the-art stage technology and enhanced audience experiences. Our commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement has made us a cornerstone of Wallonia’s cultural life.

Organization & culture: Our team comprises approximately 166 dedicated professionals who share a passion for the arts and a commitment to collaboration, creativity, and excellence. We foster an inclusive, dynamic workplace where innovation and tradition coexist. Our values center on accessibility, artistic integrity, and nurturing the next generation of performers and audiences. We actively collaborate with local businesses, educational institutions, and cultural partners to enrich the region’s cultural landscape.

Recent developments: The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège continues to expand its programming with new productions, educational initiatives, and community partnerships. Recent seasons have featured acclaimed performances, youth-focused projects, and collaborations with international artists. Our ongoing mission is to inspire and unite audiences through the transformative power of live performance.
