About us

The Alamire Foundation is an international study centre and research institution dedicated to the music and musical life of the Low Countries from the early Middle Ages until 1800. Established in 1991 as a collaborative effort between the University of Leuven (KU Leuven, Musicology Research Unit) and the non-profit organisation Musica (Impulse Centre for Music), it undertakes, stimulates, and co-ordinates innovative academic and practical research in this specialized domain.

Using state-of-the-art methods, including digital preservation, the Foundation's work culminates in significant outputs such as monographs, critical editions, facsimile publications, articles in leading journals, and its own 'Journal of the Alamire Foundation'. The Foundation is named after Petrus Alamire (c. 1470-1536), a renowned music copyist and calligrapher. Since 2017, it operates under the high patronage of Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium.

Committed to making its research accessible, the Alamire Foundation shares its findings with a broad audience through websites, exhibitions, and cultural events. It fosters multidisciplinary research projects and collaborates extensively with leading academic and heritage institutions, concert organisations, and acclaimed ensembles and performers globally.
