About us

What we do: The CRA-W Centre wallon de Recherches agronomiques is the sole public agricultural research center in the Walloon Region of Belgium. It focuses on advancing sustainable agricultural development through scientific research, services, and advisory functions. The center supports Walloon farmers, livestock breeders, horticulturists, foresters, and agro-food operators by conducting research in life sciences, biotechnology, environmental studies, and sustainable production systems. CRA-W also provides analytical laboratory services, including expertise in infrared spectrometry and chemometrics, and participates in numerous European and regional projects addressing climate neutrality, organic production, soil management, and alternative protein chains.

Location: The CRA-W headquarters is located at Rue de Liroux 9, 5030 Gembloux, Belgium. It operates across approximately 300 hectares comprising offices, laboratories, greenhouses, orchards, and experimental fields.

History: Founded in 1872, CRA-W is a scientific establishment under the Regional Government of Wallonia. Over its long history, it has grown to employ over 450 people, including around 120 scientists, and has become a key player in agricultural research and innovation in the region.

Organization & Culture: CRA-W employs a diverse team of 239 dedicated professionals (with some sources indicating over 450 employees total), emphasizing scientific rigor, societal engagement, and collaboration. The center values quality organization and strong human relationships to foster a dynamic and cohesive work environment. Its research departments cover a broad range of agricultural topics, and the center actively collaborates with public and private stakeholders, universities, and international partners.

Recent Developments: CRA-W is involved in innovative projects such as the SensAIfood Training School on AI applied to spectral data, the SPAGHYTI project using hyperspectral satellite images to monitor cereal crops, and initiatives to develop plant and alternative protein chains in Wallonia. It also contributes to regulatory guidance against illegal pesticides and promotes sustainable soil management practices.
