What we do
Ligue Handisport Francophone (LHF) is a sports federation dedicated to the inclusion of people with motor, intellectual, or sensory disabilities. Our mission is clear: to enable everyone to practice sports, from leisure activities to the highest levels of competition. By bringing together nearly 200 clubs in Wallonia and Brussels, we offer a variety of more than 30 sports disciplines, ranging from blind football to wheelchair tennis. Our work spans the NGO and human resources services sectors, focusing on accessibility, empowerment, and community building through sport.
Where we are
Our headquarters are located at Avenue du Centenaire 69, 6061 Charleroi, Belgium. We operate primarily in the French-speaking regions of Belgium, serving communities in Wallonia and Brussels.
Our history
LHF was officially established in 1977 following the split of the Belgian Sports Federation for the Disabled (FSBH), which was founded in 1960. This division created separate francophone and Dutch-speaking leagues. In 2000, the organization became the Federation of Adapted and Paralympic Sports of Belgium-Wallonia Brussels (FSBAP-WB), before adopting its current name, Ligue Handisport Francophone, in 2005. The roots of the movement date back to 1954, initiated by Professors Houssa and Tricot at the Brugmann Hospital Trauma and Rehabilitation Center in Brussels.
Organization & culture
With a team of 45 passionate employees, LHF is driven by values of respect, commitment, and solidarity. We believe that athletes with disabilities are not separate from other athletes, but are athletes in their own right. Our culture is inclusive and supportive, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Through our “elite” division, we support around fifty high-level athletes who compete in the Paralympic Games and international competitions, contributing to the Paralympic Team Belgium.
Recent developments
In recent years, LHF has continued to expand its offerings and partnerships, ensuring that adapted sports are accessible to as many people as possible. Our collaboration with local clubs and institutions remains strong, and we are committed to professionalizing our support for athletes at all levels. We strive to inspire individuals to push their limits and celebrate diversity within the sporting world.
Joining LHF means becoming part of a human adventure where every effort counts and every victory is a step toward a more inclusive future.
