The institute serves as Wallonia's reference laboratory and contributes scientific expertise to environmental risk management and policy decision-making.

Short history: Founded in 1990 as a public interest organization type A, ISSeP is the successor to institutions dating back to 1902, including the Institut des mines and the Institut national des industries charbonnières. This heritage provides over 100 years of recognized research and expertise in environmental sciences.
